Andalucian Summer Fairs
If you're looking for some fun in the sun, and adventure, then the summer fairs will provide you with all that and more. The summer fairs are great places to visit, where you can relax and go with the flow over the course of your holiday.
Every year, thousands of people from around the world flock to southern Spain for the summer fairs. It's one of the largest celebrations on the Andalusian calendar and definitely not to be missed.
In Andalucia, there are several summer fairs to visit.
The most important is the Feria de Sevilla, which takes place in April every year.
During this, there are many activities for children and adults alike.
It also has a wide variety of food and drink stalls with special offers and discounts on some products.
Seville’s summer fairs have been held since the 17th century because they were so popular.
Some fairs still includes bullfighting, though it has been reduced to be a small part of some fairs besides music and fireworks.
Others also include horse racing or other sports events.
July 16th every year there is a wide range of fairs being held along the coast of all of Spain as the spaniards celebrate the virgin Carmen who is the protector of the sailors.
The Virgin is celebrated with endless parades with statues of dear virgin Carmen both on land and at sea.
At the fair rides will be set up mainly for the children, while the adults gather around the beer/wine stalls which are located around a central stage.
In Spain you have strong family values and some of these beer/wine stalls are set up exclusively for one family, which in Spain includes members that where I am from (Denmark) we might not consider family in the same way.
The stage is the place where children and young people from various families present different performances, which can be anything from traditional music to flamenco dance.
A competition to name the Queen and the "Mister" of the village or neighbourhood is held for each age group, and is very important above all to the families of the contestants
Often there is an internal competition that takes place between some of the families and that the families measure their honor in how their dear little ones do on the big stage.
It is not always fun for the dear little ones and they sometimes have to listen to loud criticism from competing families.
On the positive note, these performances help to a large extent to keep the Spanish traditions alive and prevent them from being washed away by the global whirlwind of influence.
